Weiss Chemistry and Technology celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2015, making it one of the oldest industrial companies in the German town of Haiger. From its origin as a producer of hide glue, the company has developed into an internationally active industrial corporation for adhesives, sandwich elements and cleaning agents. This has been accompanied by several acquisitions of other companies and the gradual expansion of the headquarters in Haiger. As Managing Director Jürgen Grimm told District Administrator Wolfgang Schuster and the other delegates during the visit to the company, Weiss has four sites (Haiger, Herzebrock, Niederdreisbach and Monroe, USA) employing 300 employees, 240 of whom work in Haiger. The company's turnover is EUR 75 million, 50% of which is for export.
High proportion of trainees
Ralf Jeschke, representative of the District Crafts Guild, was positively impressed by the fact that the company employs 25 young trainees, i.e. approx. 10% of the total staff. According to Jürgen Grimm, training is an important contribution to ensuring the location's future. The company tends to offer many of the trainees a job with the company once they have completed their traineeships, since Weiss can also suffer from a shortage of professional staff.
Product range
A team of chemists and application engineers is responsible for developing the range of adhesives (Cosmo), 400 varieties of which are currently available. Many of these products are not marketed as "made by Weiss" but are renowned products that are sold by other brand names. The sandwich elements, of which 3,000 varieties are available, are used in various applications, including in container, caravan and camper van construction, in door, gate and partition wall construction, and in façade construction. End customers for all products are the industry, trade and crafts.
District Director of Economic Development Wolfram Dette underlined that it was the goal of the district that companies should be supported where possible. An example of this is when there are expansion plans and space is scarce due to the provisions of the regional plan, requiring more intensive attention to further consolidation on existing commercial space. Mayor Mario Schramm considers Weiss Chemistry and Technology to be an important showpiece company for Haiger and one that ensures more employment for the local area.
